Any experiences with GW over 3G internet? Provider offers modem huawei e170 with data card. Is this going to be fine or is this a no go?

I use one 3G modem occasionally and dont have much problems on gws. But if u also wanted for faster paced games, then it isnt that good. For Gws and most RPG's, in my own experience is decent.

Tried it, it's okay, but you probably wouldn't want to PvP with it.

That`s what i`ve read somewhere, that 3g connection has some lag with upload. If it`s not so good for PvP or even FPS games, that could be the case..

Tried it today on work with a generic G3 modem (some no-name USB thingy). Works just fine, but I get 400-800 average ping. Back to optics...

Edit: I was testing in HSDPA(G3) area. But as far as I remember the type of connection HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE/whatever more affects the transfer speed than ping that is kind of more important in MMOs.

We call them mobile broadband over here. They're not made for gaming, they're made for web browsing and light downloading. Some people might be able to game with one, but depends how strong their signal is. They on phone signals. If the signal in your area is weak you'll end up getting 56k dial up speeds and not the 7.2mbps they advertise. To get the 7.2mbps you need to be in an area with a strong HSDPA signal (basically 3G)

Signal is extra strong. If it was even down to gprs or even 56k speed i would be able to connect regardless. But i cannot connect to gw server at all.

Mixie, does the modem/card have some firewall of it's own?

I guess there is no firewall on the modem or the card, but will check today with my provider about this mess.

Mixie,

Can you access the internet at all? Not just the GW page, but google, microsoft?

If you are able to access the internet then do the following:

1) close down your anti-virus and firewall.
2) access GW.
3) do NOT access a web browser while the av and fw are shut down.

If you still cannot access GW then there has to be some form of blocking on your card. Most port closing is handled by the av and fw, so if they are off all your ports should be accessible.

In theory you should be able to reverse this by simply changing the settings on your 3G device. I find it hard to believe that a network would deliberately block gaming sites/ports to limit traffic, especially without telling consumers.

Yes for those security paranoid out there it does make the computer more vulnerable to attack during the short time they are down, however this is the best way to ensure that there is no software interference.

Remember to turn them (the anti-virus and firewall) back on when done.

If you CAN access the game, then evidently the problem lies with your firewall and anti-virus.

If someone knows of a windows security update which closes ports, more specifically the most common gaming port (is it 80? not really sure), outside of the fw then please make that known. I know of no update which does this

If you are unable to access the internet currently there may be a few simpler explainations:

1) 3G modems must be activated. You have to ring a given number in order to activate it. If you have not done this the modem will not work.
2) Phone/telecommunications companies (at least here) take their sweet time about processing the activation of phones and modems (sim card devices), best solution is to bug them until they do.
3) Your username and password may be wrong. Check and double check.
4) Malfunctioning device.

In all of the above cases you will probably need to talk to your telco.

I hope this helps.

I can access anything on the net, apart from the gw itself and gw official site. Still have to check with my provider about this tho. Didn`t have time yet to do so. Anyway, i will post the result, whatever it may be
And Lady Lozza, big thanx for your will to help.

Provider mailed me a .reg file with protocols, which have solved the problem.

I used a 3G modem (same brand but different model) all summer. It sucked for online gaming. If I was in the city with a good connection speed and signal it was playable - ok for PVE in Guild Wars, but not a good option for PVP. OUtside of the better signal areas where my connection speed was only 236.8kbps it was not playable (unless you like 1200 avg. ping). :/
